Happy 2014! These past few weeks have been super busy, so a casual day is long overdue! I love this French lesson tee; it’s soft, linen, and a comfortable fit. Today’s ensemble is a mix of two of my staples: knitwear and black. I love the contrasting large and small knit gauges on this sweater. Even though it’s a heavy kit, the raglan sleeves give it a chic and refined finish. I kept it simple with a black skinny pant and coat. A bold red lip gives my look the right amount of pop. For travel, I opt for comfort and a monochromatic palette. I like to layer and have a scarf at the ready. It keeps me cozy during the flight since it always seems chilly, no matter the season. As I mentioned here, I like to travel light and efficiently. For a weekend trip I pack a carry-on suitcase and large bag to tote around my toiletries, book, purse, and iPad mini. Every once in a while a pop of color is all you need to make a look come together. I like that pop of color to be a bright bag, scarf, or shoe. This scarf from Eliza Dot Design is the perfect amount of bright blue and keeps my look feeling chic and effortless.

I hope everyone had a great weekend! Chicago was hit with another snowstorm on Saturday, beginning in the wee hours of the morning and lasting until early evening. Somehow, I managed to be out and about the entire weekend, even in the frigid 15° temperatures on Sunday picking up a few more Christmas gifts. Layers over layers are my go-to as of late. I’ve never been too excited about wearing hats. When I was little, I remember avoiding it as much as possible when it was time to go outside in the cold. However, now it’s one of my must-have winter accessories. Mostly out of function, rather than fashion. Since Chicago has some pretty frigid temperatures, lake-effect snow, and bitter winds during the winter; I can’t leave my house without one these days. I always like neutrals and classic pieces for winter accessories – just like this ribbed hat with a fox fur pom-pom.

‘Tis the season for holiday parties. Since most begin right after work, a desk-to-drink look is best. For me, it’s black with a play on textures and subtle gold accents. All-day comfort is important, too. If you’re not one to wear heels all day, don’t start now! Hobbling into the party isn’t the way to go, so bring those heels with you to slip on right before heading out. Freshen your makeup and add a bold lip, like YSL – Le Rouge.

Sometimes it’s nice to take a break from winter’s heavy fabrics and switch to a delicate floral print. Neutrals pair nicely with this muted print, keeping the pants the main focal point. I love the oversized collar on this wool coat – it’s perfect for those (frequent) blustery winter days.
